Spreading over 600 square kilometres, Madrid is Europe’s third largest urban centre. The city rests in the heart of Spain, and the Manzanares River flows through it.

The Landscape of Madrid and Its Geographic Features

Fluvial River Basin – A river drainage basin lies to the east of Madrid.

Manzanares – Running down through the centre of Spain, the Manzanares comes from its source in the mountain pass of Navacerrada. In the village of Arganda del Rey to the south-east of Madrid, the Manzanares joins the Jarama River. In Madrid, the city utilizes the majority of the river in a system of canals.

Meseta Central – In the centre of Spain where its capital city of Madrid is found, the Iberian Peninsula has a high and prominent plateau.

Mountains – The Sistema Central is a grouping of mountain ridges and ranges in the middle of the country. Sierra de Guadarrama is the range closest to Madrid.

Vegetation – Madrid has the most trees and green areas of any European metropolis. These forested and open green parklands are located in city parks and natural reserved areas like Plaza de Oriente and El Pardo.
